Volunteer Focus: Yanet Raesu

Yanet

Yanet Raesu - Youth Detention Center

Yanet attends Union Church in Columbia. She serves with unCUFFED at the Youth Detention Center in Baltimore city as a mentor and Bible Study leader. She has a heart for the boys, they see her compassion.

What is your favorite Bible verse? Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Why do you serve with unCUFFED? During the pandemic I moved to Louisiana.I was alone and lost access to my community. Praying, feeling isolated, God put prisoners on my heart. I started writing to prisoners, and heard that God was displaying miracles behind bars. When I moved to Baltimore, God called me to the prisoners here.

Have you made a special connection with someone inside? Yes, Tavon. He is a consistent attender and a leader. His behavior inside is paradoxical with what caused him to be locked up.

What makes you a succesful volunteer?  Listening, relational equity, and earning the right to share the Truth of Jesus Christ.

What will change the climate of violence in Baltimore? Proactive change before incarceration occurs.

What else do we need to know about you? I am able to tell others about the boys, we need to disciple, train up, and love them. There are other people like me that are available to serve or have a passion but it is untapped.
