Marly Darcelin - Youth Detention Center

Marly is a long-time dedicated servant to our girls. She loves Jesus and loves ‘the least of these.’

Where do you attend church? The Fathers House of Baltimore

What’s your favorite Bible Verse? John 13:35 “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

At which facility do you serve? Youth Detention Center

Why did you decide to volunteer inside the jails? I decided to volunteer after a research project I completed in undergrad about recidivism rates and open prison styles in Norway. My heart became burdened at the idea that many incarcerated individuals are separated from society but not rehabilitated while they are away. I decided that I wanted to become a part of the solution – To offer spiritual freedom to those who are bound.

Is there one girl you have connected with? Yes, her name is Ashante. We connected over a few months digging into the gospel, God’s love for her, and his plan for her future. I really saw how she grew to become more kind, patient, and hopeful for her life after release.

What skills do you have that make you successful in your service? I believe that my compassion and words of wisdom make me successful in this role. Especially as it concerns the youth population, Its vital that I am able to empathize with them so that they don’t feel condemned, but that I am also able to provide them the tools needed to live a more whole life.

What will change the climate of youth violence in Baltimore? Prayer. The bible says that the harvest is plenty and the laborers are few. When we pray, we ask God for wisdom, for strategy, and we are able to exercise spiritual authority over our homes and neighborhoods. As the pieces start to move together, I believe that we will see organizations like this one take on a new level of grace that allows us to dismantle violence in the city of Baltimore through service, discipleship, and through the spread of God’s love.

Comments: It’s truly an honor to serve in this capacity. I leave the weekly sessions feeling so honored that God would choose to send someone like me to reach His people.
