The Dichotomy of Prison Ministry

Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

It’s a regular Tuesday evening at the Youth Detention Center in Baltimore City. YDC is operated by the Adult Department of Corrections and is designed to hold juveniles who are being charged as adults and not permitted to be housed in the Juvenile Justice System because of their propensity to violence. Despite that the facility is clean, usually safe, and has a high performing high school built into the jail.

On this Tuesday, Erik and Bob hold a Bible Study with the boys in one room while Marly and Miriam do the same with the girls in another room. Miriam told me, “On a joyful note—Haley gave her life to Jesus! And Marcere wrote her salvation prayer and also surrendered her life to Christ! It’s amazing to witness how God is moving in these young women’s lives, and we’re standing in faith to see the same transformation in our boys.”

Meanwhile, a new boy who had been in Protective Custody returned to General Population to attend the study. As he was reading a Scripture another boy stood up and punched him in the face. It played out in seconds, as the other boys tried to seperate the two, officers rushed iin with pepper spray. They seperated and handcuffed the two boys and escorted everyone out. Bob said, “I believe there were evil forces driving the fight with the boys last night. I pray that the Lord speaks to the boys showing them His power over the forces of evil and that they embrace God’s power to guide them. May they surrender their will to the will of The Father.”

We remember Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” We will be back this Tuesday serving the boys and girls, understanding that Kingdom service is not linear. At times we suffer setbacks but we keep our hands on the plow and look forward rather than back in Kingdom service.
