The Lies We Tell Ourselves

We met Jacob (pseudonym) at the County Detention Center a few years back. I mentored him for several months before he was sentenced to a 15 year term in State prison for murder. Recently, Kim asked him to tell us the lies he believed that led to his choices and his incarceration. His response is in the picture above.

As I read Jacob’s lies I started to think how similar his thoughts were to my own flawed thinking. We are born a sinful people and only through God’s loving sanctification are we made better. Jacob committed a terrible act and he is paying the price for his choices but God is working in his heart and changing him. Jacob is not beyond redemption, no one is.

Romans 3:20 “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.”
